Maren House

Nine rooms, six shown here

Pick your colour

Every room at Maren House is named for the pigment on its walls and furnished around one good idea: a copper bath, a canopy, a door onto the courtyard. All include breakfast until midday, use of the plunge pool, and the roof at any hour.

    Verdigris

The green room at the top of the painted stair.

Deep viridian walls, a canopied king bed and a pair of arched windows over the courtyard fig. The quietest green in the house and the first room we ever finished, which is why it still gets the best chair.

    Madder

Rose-pink suite with a sitting room and sea light.

Our largest room, washed floor to ceiling in madder rose. A proper sitting room, a bed you have to climb slightly to get into, and the pale gold light that only the sea end of Kemptown gets in the afternoon.

  • Chapter III · Room 03

    Saffron

Ochre double above the courtyard lanterns.

Warm ochre plaster, brass lamps and a low arched alcove that swallows an armchair whole. At night the courtyard lanterns come on below the window and the whole room turns the colour of its own name.

    Indigo

Blue-black hideaway made for late risers.

The darkest room in the house, on purpose. Indigo walls, heavy curtains, a bed dressed in linen the colour of midnight and nothing to wake you but the gulls, and we have had words with the gulls.

    £170 a night

  • Chapter V · Room 05

    Oxblood

Burgundy double with the best bath in Brighton.

Burgundy lacquer, a green marble washstand, and a copper bath set squarely in the room where a wardrobe ought to be. The bath takes eleven minutes to fill and we consider that part of the experience.

    £195 a night
    • Copper bath in room
    • Marble washstand

  • Chapter VI · Room 06

    Olive

Garden-level room opening straight onto the courtyard.

Soft olive green with its own arched door onto the courtyard, so you can pad from bed to plunge pool in eleven steps. We counted. Best for anyone who thinks a hotel room should have a garden attached.

    • Own courtyard door
    • Level access
