Maren House

Beyond your room

Four places to lose the day

The house is built for lingering. Everything below is for guests only, included in every stay, and arranged so the longest journey of your day is one painted staircase.

The high point

The Rooftop

A terrace above the square with daybeds, potted olives and a straight line of sea between two chimney stacks. Breakfast moves up here on fine mornings; from five o'clock it turns to sherry, spritzes and the good crisps.

Blankets and hot water bottles appear the moment the wind remembers this is England.

Guests only, dawn until 11pm

The quiet centre

The Courtyard

A walled garden at the heart of the house, shaded by a fig that predates all of us, with a heated plunge pool tiled in the house green. The sound of the city stops at the wall. Most guests lose an afternoon here without noticing.

The plunge pool is kept at 28 degrees and the fig keeps its own counsel.

Open all day, pool 7am to 9pm

The indoors

The Snug

A lacquered burgundy bar and library on the ground floor: honesty bar, records, backgammon, and the deepest sofa we could fit through a Regency doorway. Nightcaps are self-service and self-reported.

The house vermouth is made two streets away. We are unreasonably proud of this.

Always open, honesty bar after 6pm

The warm room

The Bath House

A small steam room and two treatment rooms below stairs, tiled in the house green with a cold bucket shower for the brave. Massages are bookable by the hour with two days' notice.

The bucket is optional. The feeling afterwards is the whole point.

Bookable sessions, 8am to 8pm
