Kemptown, Brighton
Maren House is a Regency townhouse turned inward: nine rooms around a painted stair, a walled courtyard where the city goes quiet, and a rooftop that trades chimney pots for a line of sea.
The idea of the house
We borrowed the logic of a Marrakech riad and let a Brighton townhouse wear it. The rooms face inward to light wells and greenery, every floor is painted a colour you could name from across the street, and the day is built around long breakfasts, the plunge pool, and the roof at six o'clock.
The rooms
Each room is named for the pigment on its walls and set down here like the part-titles of a book. Read the house cover to cover, pick a colour, and the house will do the rest.

Beyond your room
Four guest-only spaces stacked through the house, from the steam room below stairs to the sea line on the roof.
The high point
A terrace above the square with daybeds, potted olives and a straight line of sea between two chimney stacks. Breakfast moves up here on fine mornings; from five o'clock it turns to sherry, spritzes and the good crisps.
See the spaceThe quiet centre
A walled garden at the heart of the house, shaded by a fig that predates all of us, with a heated plunge pool tiled in the house green. The sound of the city stops at the wall. Most guests lose an afternoon here without noticing.
See the spaceThe house in colour
Nine rooms, four spaces and one very opinionated paint chart. Until you visit, here is the palette the house is painted in, wall by wall.

“The rooftop at six with a sherry and that thin stripe of sea. I think about it weekly.”
“Dark room, heavy curtains, no alarm. The single best night of sleep I have had in years.”
